4.                         ketchup
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ketchup ,
Word History:     The word ketchup exemplifies the types of modifications that can take place in borrowing -- both of words and substances. The source of our word ketchup may be the Malay word kechap, possibly taken into Malay from the Cantonese dialect of Chinese. Kechap, like ketchup, was a sauce, but one without tomatoes; rather, it contained fish brine, herbs, and spices. Sailors seem to have brought the sauce to Europe, where it was made with locally available ingredients such as the juice of mushrooms or walnuts. At some unknown point, when the juice of tomatoes was first used, ketchup as we know it was born. But it is important to realize that in the 18th and 19th centuries ketchup was a generic term for sauces whose only common ingredient was vinegar. The word is first recorded in English in 1690 in the form catchup, in 1711 in the form ketchup, and in 1730 in the form catsup. All three spelling variants of this foreign borrowing remain current.

5.                              pickle
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pickle ,
Word History:   Trade with the Low Countries across the North Sea was important to England in the later Middle Ages, and it is perhaps because of this trade that we have the word pickle. Middle English pikel, the ancestor of our word, is first recorded around 1400 with the meaning "a spicy sauce or gravy served with meat or fowl." This is a different sense from the one the word brings to mind now, but it is somewhat related in sense to its possible Middle Dutch source pekel, a solution, such as spiced brine, for preserving and flavoring food. After coming into English the word pickle expanded its sense range in several ways. It was applied, as it had been in Middle Dutch, to a pickling solution. Later pickle was used to refer to something so treated, such as a cucumber. The word also took on a figurative sense, "a troublesome situation," perhaps under the influence of a similar Dutch usage in the phrase in de pekel zitten, "sit in the pickle," and iemand in de pekel laten zitten, "let someone sit in the pickle."

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/advise ,
Usage Note:    The use of advise in the sense of "inform, notify" was found acceptable by a majority of the Usage Panel in an earlier survey, but many members would prefer that this usage be restricted to business correspondence and legal contexts. Thus one may say The suspects were advised of their rights, but it would be considered pretentious to say You'd better advise your friends that the date of the picnic has been changed.

7.                             holler
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/holler ,
Regional Note:     One feature of Upper Southern English and specifically of Appalachian English is its pronunciation of the final unstressed syllable in words such as hollow, window, and potato as (Λr). Holler, winder, and tater are merely variant pronunciations reflected in spelling. As a noun, holler has the specific meaning in the Appalachians of "a small valley between mountains": They live up in the holler underneath Big Bald Mountain.

http://www.answers.com/topic/powerful ,
Regional Note:        In the Upper Southern United States   the words powerful and mighty are intensives used frequently in the same way as very:     Your boy's grown powerful big.    The new baby is mighty purty.         Powerful is used as an adjective in some expressions:       The storm did a powerful lot of harm.           In the same dialect region the noun power has, in addition to its standard meaning, the sense of "a large number or amount."          This sense appears in the Oxford English Dictionary as common in dialectal British English of the 18th and 19th centuries:        "It has done a power of work" (Charles Dickens).          All these derivative senses of power and might take advantage of the notion of strength inherent in these nouns, making them natural intensives.         Colloquial English is always on the lookout for ways to make language more vivid with new intensives.           We think of the Upper Southern part of the United States as linguistically conservative,    but in fact it has preserved uses of power, powerful, and mighty that were innovative in their time.

B)
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/purty ,
Regional Note:   Purty is probably the most common American example of metathesis, a linguistic process in which two adjacent sounds are reversed in order. Metathesis in English often involves the consonant r and a vowel, since the phonetic properties of r are so vowellike. For example, the word third used to be thrid, and bird, brid. By the same process, English pretty often came to be realized as purty in regional speech. Most such words stabilized because of the influence of printing and the resultant standardized spelling, but purty for pretty has survived in regional American dialects.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/bad ,
Usage Note:    Bad is often used as an adverb in sentences such as The house was shaken up pretty bad or We need water bad. This usage is common in informal speech but is widely regarded as unacceptable in formal writing. In an earlier survey, the sentence His tooth ached so bad he could not sleep was unacceptable to 92 percent of the Usage Panel. • The use of badly with want was once considered incorrect but is now entirely acceptable: We wanted badly to go to the beach. • The adverb badly is often used after verbs such as feel, as in I felt badly about the whole affair. This usage bears analogy to the use of other adverbs with feel, such as strongly in We feel strongly about this issue. Some people prefer to maintain a distinction between feel badly and feel bad, restricting the former to emotional distress and using the latter to cover physical ailments; however, this distinction is not universally observed, so feel badly should be used in a context that makes its meaning clear. • Badly is used in some regions to mean "unwell," as in He was looking badly after the accident. Poorly is also used in this way. In an earlier survey, however, the usage was found unacceptable in formal writing by 75 percent of the Usage Panel.

Re:    Article of  "unity/cohesion, barrenness, aridness/poorer/unproductivity, technological), propitiatory/atonable/reparative"   <<Column 37.  poorer/poorly>>

Our Living Language    Most people might think that the slang usage of bad to mean its opposite, "excellent," is a recent innovation of Black English. While it is of Black English origin, this usage has been recorded for over a century; the first known example dates from 1897. Even earlier, beginning in the 1850s, the word appears in the sense "formidable, very tough," as applied to persons. Whether or not the two usages are related, they both illustrate a favorite creative device of informal and slang language --- using a word to mean the opposite of what it "really" means. This is by no means uncommon; people use words sarcastically to mean the opposite of their actual meanings on a daily basis. What is more unusual is for such a usage to be generally accepted within a larger community. Perhaps when the concepts are as basic as "good" and "bad" this general acceptance is made easier. A similar instance is the word uptight, which in the 1960s enjoyed usage in the sense "excellent" alongside its now-current, negative meaning of "stiff."

Word Usage
badly or bad?
Bad is an adjective;    is also a highly informal adverb meaning "badly,"  a usage that has never gained acceptance in formal writing.  Substitute badly for bad in sentences like these:  The sacked quarterback was hurting bad.  The Southeast needs rain bad.   My back ached so bad that I had to lie down.   Another problem is whether or not to use bad or badly after the verb feel.  After this verb, use the adjective bad,  not the adverb badly,  if you mean that you are experiencing, or feeling, physical distress:  After chemotherapy, I felt bad.  On the other hand, if you are experiencing or feeling emotional - not physical - distress, use the adverb badly, not the adjective bad:  I feel badly about the accident because it was entirely my fault.  In the last example, badly works just like some other -ly adverbs,   such as strongly or emphatically, in conveying the idea of emotions,  as in The President feels strongly [not strong] about the need for both sides of the armed conflict to return to the negotiating table.  The leaders feel emphatically [not emphatic] that each side must prove good faith before they will resume their talks.

Usage Note:           The meanings of intense and intensive overlap considerably,   but they are often subtly distinct.         When used to describe human feeling or activity,   intense often suggests a strength or concentration that arises from inner dispositions   and is particularly appropriate for describing emotional states:     intense pleasure, intense dislike, intense loyalty, and so forth.          Intensive is more frequently applied   when the strength or concentration of an activity is imposed from without:    intensive bombing, intensive training, intensive marketing.         Thus a reference to Mark's intense study of German suggests that Mark himself was responsible for the concentrated activity,   whereas Mark's intensive study of German suggests that the program in which Mark was studying was designed to cover a great deal of material in a brief period.

http://www.answers.com/topic/medium ,
Usage Note:       The etymologically plural form media is often used as a singular to refer to a particular means of communication,   as in The Internet is the most exciting new media since television.         Many people regard this usage as incorrect,   preferring medium in such contexts.
•People also use media with the definite article as a collective term to refer not to the forms of communication themselves so much as the communities and institutions behind them.         In this sense, the media means something like "the press."      Like other collective nouns, it may take a singular or plural verb depending on the intended meaning.          If the point is to emphasize the multifaceted nature of the press,   a plural verb may be more appropriate:      The media have covered the trial in a variety of formats.         Frequently, however, media stands as a singular noun for the aggregate of journalists and broadcasters:        The media has not shown much interest in covering the trial.          This development of a singular media parallels that of more established words such as data and agenda,   which are also Latin plurals that have acquired a singular meaning.
•The singular medium cannot be used as a collective noun for the press.         The sentence  No medium has shown much interest in covering the issue,  would suggest that the lack of interest is in the means of communication itself  rather than in its practitioners.

12.                             impact/contact

A)
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/impact ,
Usage Note:      The use of impact as a verb meaning "to have an effect" often has a big impact on readers. In our 2001 survey, 85 percent of the Usage Panel disapproved of the construction to impact on, as in the sentence These policies are impacting on our ability to achieve success; fully 80 percent disapproved of the use of impact as a transitive verb in the sentence The court ruling will impact the education of minority students. • It is unclear why this usage provokes such a strong response, but it cannot be because of novelty. Impact has been used as a verb since 1601, when it meant "to fix or pack in," and its modern, figurative use dates from 1935. It may be that its frequent appearance in the jargon-riddled remarks of politicians, military officials, and financial analysts continues to make people suspicious. Nevertheless, the verbal use of impact has become so common in the working language of corporations and institutions that many speakers have begun to regard it as standard. It seems likely, then, that the verb will eventually become as unobjectionable as contact is now, since it will no longer betray any particular pretentiousness on the part of those who use it. See Usage Note at contact.

http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/impact.html ,
Word Usage
Many careful writers strongly dislike the verb impact in any figurative sense whatsoever, as in    The revised budget impacts the university unfavorably   and   The revised budget impacts on the athletic program.         Though the verb in senses extending beyond the infliction of physical force is undeniably common in business, legal, journalistic, and political discourse, anyone who hopes to achieve an effect even faintly literary should avoid it in favor of affect, change.          Use of the verb is uncontroversial only in physical senses:    The car impacted the railing.          By the same token, the noun impact should not be used as a catchall alternative for words like effect or impression;     rather, it should be used to convey the idea of powerful, dramatic consequence:     The sudden rise in prices had a calamitous impact on many economies.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/contact ,
Usage Note:   The verb contact is a classic example of a verb that was made from a noun and of a new usage that was initially frowned upon. The noun meaning "the state or condition of touching" was introduced in 1626 by Francis Bacon. Some 200 years later it spawned a verb meaning "to bring or place in contact." This sense of the verb has lived an unremarkable life in technical contexts. It was only in the first quarter of the 20th century that contact came to be used to mean "to communicate with," and soon afterward the controversy began. Contact was declared to be properly a noun, not a verb, and moreover to be vague when used as a verb. However, turning nouns into verbs is one of the most frequent ways in which new verbs enter English. Sometimes there is resistance to such verbs, but often, especially when a term seems free of association with the jargon of business or bureaucracy, acceptance comes more freely, as with curb, date, elbow, interview, panic, and park. Contact is but another instance of what linguists call functional shift from one part of speech to another. As for the vagueness of contact, this seems a virtue in an age in which forms of communication have proliferated. The sentence We will contact you when the part comes in allows for a variety of possible ways to communicate: by mail, telephone, computer, or fax. • Despite the lengthy history of disapproval of contact by language critics, the verb's usefulness and popularity appear to have worn down resistance to it. In 1969, only 34 percent of the Usage Panel accepted the use of contact as a verb, but in a recent survey 65 percent of the Panel accepted it in the sentence She immediately called an officer at the Naval Intelligence Service, who in turn contacted the FBI. See Usage Note at impact.
