Word Usage
Data - singular or plural?
Because the meaning data is much like that of the singular noun information,   and because its Latin -a plural announces the word's plural status less plainly than a final s would,    it is often treated as if it were singular.       This use is extremely common, and few perceive it as wrong these days,    especially given the word's connotation of a collection or single unit made up of many informational subunits.        All the same, in formal English,   Our data have been assembled over a number of years would be regarded as correct, and commonly used constructions such as very little data, the data shows..., and a great deal of data would be regarded as incorrect.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/DATA ,
Usage Note:         The word data is the plural of Latin datum, "something given,"    but it is not always treated as a plural noun in English.        The plural usage is still common, as this headline from the New York Times attests:  "Data Are Elusive on the Homeless."         Sometimes scientists think of data as plural,   as in These data do not support the conclusions.         But more often scientists and researchers think of data as a singular mass entity like information,    and most people now follow this in general usage.         Sixty percent of the Usage Panel accepts the use of data with a singular verb and pronoun in the sentence   Once the data is in, we can begin to analyze it.          A still larger number, 77 percent, accepts the sentence  We have very little data on the efficacy of such programs, where the quantifier very little,   which is not used with similar plural nouns such as facts and results, implies that data here is indeed singular.

USAGE           From a historical point of view only, the word data is a plural.     In fact, in many cases it is not clear from context if it is being used as a singular or plural,   so there is no issue:     when next needed the data can be accessed very quickly.        When it is necessary to specify, the preferred usage nowadays in general language is to treat it as singular, as in:   this data is useful to the government in the planning of housing services.        There are rather more examples in the Bank of English of these data than this data, with a marked preference for the plural in academic and scientific writing.       As regards data is versus data are,    the preference for the plural form overall is even more marked in that kind of writing.       When speaking, however, it is best to opt for treating the word as singular, except in precise scientific contexts.     The singular form datum is comparatively rare in the sense of a single item of data.

5.                                   dope
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dope ,
Regional Note:   Dope was borrowed into English from the Dutch word doop, "sauce." Throughout the 19th century it meant "gravy." In the North Midland United States, particularly Ohio, dope is still heard as the term for an ice-cream topping, such as syrup. In the South, particularly in South Carolina, dope means "a cola-flavored soft drink." Dope was especially used of those medicinal preparations that produced a stupefying effect, and it even became a slang term for the dark, molasses-like form of opium that was smoked in opium dens. Some of the common modern meanings of the word dope -- "a narcotic substance" and "narcotics considered as a group," -- developed from this use of the word.

6.                                         controller/comptroller
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/controller ,
Usage Note:    In the 15th century, the word controller developed the alternate spelling comptroller as a result of an association between the first part of the word, cont, and the etymologically unrelated word count and its variant compt. Although the historical pronunciation of comptroller would be the same as for controller, evidence suggests that the spelling pronunciations (komp-tro'lΛr) and (ko'mptrolΛr) may now be used by a majority of speakers. In a recent survey, 43 percent of the Usage Panel indicated that they pronounce comptroller like controller, while 57 percent pronounce it with mp, as it is spelled, with stress on either the first or second syllable. And half of those Panelists who pronounce comptroller like controller indicated that they also consider the spelling pronunciations acceptable.

7.                                      "in regard to"
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/regard ,
Usage Note:   Regard is traditionally used in the singular in the phrase in regard (not in regards) to. Regarding and as regards are also standard in the sense "with reference to." In the same sense with respect to is acceptable, but respecting is not. • Respects is sometimes considered preferable to regards in the sense of "particulars": In some respects (not regards) the books are alike.

8.                                           salutation,     valediction
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/salutation ,
Usage Note:   The informality of electronic mail poses a problem for the traditional norms of epistolary style. In a formal e-mail message, there is nothing out of place in beginning with a formula such as Dear Professor Fillmore and closing with Very truly yours. Since e-mail is a relatively new medium for communication, however, set phrases for informal greetings and closings are still being established. At times, the salutation and valediction are left out entirely, even when the correspondents do not know each other well. Informal salutations include common greetings like Hi or simply the addressee's name. People have been much more creative with the closing, employing terms such as best wishes and cheers, the latter term previously associated with British use and perhaps adopted because it sounds a neutral note between the kind of closings used in letters and phone calls. Still more informal is TTFN, an abbreviation for ta-ta for now, another Briticism.

The use of "kind regards" is most likely derived from the more formal, "kindest regards," which is itself a phrase derived from the even more formal combination of "Kindest regards, I remain," "yours" or "truly yours" or any one of a number of valedictions in common usage.[citation needed]

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hassle ,
Word History:   It is difficult to believe that there were no hassles before 1945, the year in which the noun hassle is first recorded in English. The origins of this word might be considered a hassle for the etymologist. An English dialect word, hassle, meaning "to hack at, cut with a blunt knife and with a sawing motion," is recorded at the end of the 19th century. A Southern dialect word, hassle, "to pant, breathe heavily," is also a possible source. A more popular notion has been that hassle is a blend, but here again we have a hassle. Three separate possibilities have been proposed, a combination of harass and hustle, haggle and tussle, and haggle and wrestle. Given all these possibilities, it is clear why words such as hassle end up with the etymology "origin unknown."

Re:    Article of  "avenge, scold, anxious, 'auxiliary verb', off, ugly/clever, absolute (term), like, run, able, hardly,  M&M"      <<Column 50.  scold>>

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scold ,
Word History:   A scold is not usually a poet and a scolding rarely sounds like poetry to the one being scolded, but it seems that the word scold has a poetic background. It is probable that scold, first recorded in Middle English in a work probably composed around 1150, has a Scandinavian source related to the Old Icelandic word skald, "poet." Middle English scolde may in fact mean "a minstrel," but of that we are not sure. However, its Middle English meanings, "a ribald abusive person" and "a shrewish chiding woman," may be related to skald, as shown by the senses of some of the Old Icelandic words derived from skald. Old Icelandic skaldskapr, for example, meant "poetry" in a good sense but also "a libel in verse," while skald-stöng meant "a pole with imprecations or charms scratched on it." It would seem that libelous cursing verse was a noted part of at least some poets' productions and that this association with poets passed firmly along with the Scandinavian borrowing into English.

14.                                   rap,         hip-hop
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/rap ,
Our Living Language    The culture of hip-hop has been the source of dozens of words and expressions in American English, of which rap is one of the most familiar. The word is probably a development ultimately of rap meaning "to hit." It shows up in the early 1900s in the extended meaning "to express orally," as used by so notable a figure as Winston Churchill in 1933. Over the next few decades it came to mean "to discuss or debate informally," a meaning that was well established in the African-American community by the late 1960s. A decade later the word was applied to an evolving style of music characterized by, among other things, beat-driven rhymes of an often improvisatory nature. The slang that is integral to the lyrics of rap continues to be a source of borrowings into colloquial American English; recent examples include chill, meaning "to calm down," and dis, meaning "to show disrespect to." These are but the latest examples in a long series of such borrowings from Black English stretching back a century or more, many of them directly from popular music lyrics or from musicians' lingo.

15.                                 riot act
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/riot+act ,
Word History:    The riot act has been read to far more people than the disturbers of the peace the Riot Act was intended to control. The official Riot Act was enacted by Parliament in 1715 to discourage unlawful assembly and civic turbulence, although the first recorded use of the term Riot Act to refer to this legislation does not appear until 1731. The act provided that if 12 or more people gathered unlawfully or for purposes of disturbing the peace, a portion of the Riot Act would be read to them, and if the assembled did not disperse by one hour after this reading, they would be guilty of felony. The Riot Act, which was not repealed until 1973, became a part of the public consciousness and developed an extended sense in the phrase to read the riot act, meaning "to warn forcefully." The first use of riot act in this way is found in a work published in 1819: "She has just run out to read the riot act in the Nursery."
